A Georgia town is attempting to pass an ordinance which would target United States illegal immigration in their county by punishing businesses that hire illegal immigrants and forcing renters to provide immigration status information.
The Cherokee County commission attempted to pass a similar ordinance in 2006 that placed the burden of checking immigration status on landlords, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That bill was challenged in court and never enforced.
If passed, the new bill would require renters to obtain occupancy permit and provide personal information, including their citizenship status, to the county. If renters were found to be in the country illegally, the county would revoke their occupancy permit.
The ordinance would also allow the county to suspend the permits of businesses that are found to employ illegal immigrants.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced that there was a 63 percent increase in the amount of illegal immigrants deported from Georgia and the Carolinas for a 12 month period ending October 31st.
ICE identified more than 4,700 illegals who were detained in the state of Georgia. The Atlanta field office of ICE reported that it processed more than 40,000 illegal aliens over the last year.
