The Department of Homeland Security has reported an increase in the number of people who became U.S. citizens during 2008.

According to iCNN, over a million people took the Oath of Allegiance this year, the largest number in the 100 years since records began.

It is thought that the increase came as a result of a call for eligible residents to apply for citizenship.

Meanwhile, the number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. seems to be falling. Homeland Security figures estimated that 11.8 million unauthorized aliens were living in the country in 2007.

However, the LA Times reported in September that according to U.S. census data, one million illegal immigrants left the country between August 2007 and May 2008.

This was thought to be as a result of the declining economy and a lack of available jobs for those entering the U.S., as well as a crackdown on those employing people without documentation.
