A campaign group in Washington is collecting signatures for an initiative that aims to toughen up laws on United States illegal immigration.

Herald.net reports that Respect Washington wants to achieve a quarter of a million signatories to the proposal by the end of 2008, with the goal being to stop illegal immigrants from working in Washington state.

Craig Keller, a member of Respect Washington, said that if it comes into effect, the initiative would stop illegal immigrants from attending high school or obtaining healthcare, as well as getting a driver’s license which could be used to get a job.

Mr Keller added that illegal immigrants sap funds meant for US citizens.

“We are just being robbed by illegal activity. The taxpayer is being fleeced,” he commented.

If the group collects 224,880 signatures by ten days before the state’s legislative session begins, the initiative will be considered by lawmakers or put to a vote.

The two major political parties in the US have differing views on tackling illegal immigration. Conservative Republicans generally support stricter enforcement of immigration laws, while Democrats tend to favor policies that would allow illegal immigrants to eventually become citizens.
